Ministry Sites - Dominican RepublicMinistry sites are occupational settings where our staff, outreach participants and the poor come together cross-culturally to encounter God, share the Good News, disciple and serve others in a specific area that correlates with their career or academic interests. The following descriptions provide details about our ministry sites. Agribusiness - Julio Mendez and Andre LaraThe agribusiness site started with the purpose of teaching space efficient farming techniques as many men in the community own a small unused plot of land near their house. Julio and Andre are continuing their assessment of the community's agricultural needs to develop future projects. Art - Francisco Castillo and Elizabeth EcklundFrancisco and Elizabeth operate an art studio in the town of Jarabacoa. They sculpt and paint in oil and watercolor. Daily art classes are offered. Several afternoons per week, they take their easel and art supplies to the park in the center of town to paint. Construction - Jose Nolasco and Brian EntrekinJose and Brian build homes for families in need. They work in different communities around Jarabacoa. They also assist other ministry sites with construction needs and partner with local workers to manufacture affordable bricks for building. Dentistry - Vanesa NolascoThe dentistry site in Jarabacoa provides dental care to the poor through our clinic where Vanesa cleans, fills, and extracts teeth for her patients. She leads outreaches in rural communities where dental care is less accessible and affordable and also teaches dental hygiene to children in the public school system. Education - Daniel Suarez and Johana BerroaMata Gorda is a poor farming community with a beautiful view of the mountains. Generations of families without a relationship with God has produced drug and alcohol problems and fractured family structures. Daniel and Johana teach preschool and tutor students attending the local public school. Blog - Mata Gorda Education - Anyely Williams and Yajaira PegueroThis education site is located in a poverty-stricken squatter community called El Callejon. Each day Anyely and Yajaira teach morning and afternoon classes for the children of the community. Their instruction includes reading, writing, mathematics, character development, prayer, and Bible study. Blog - El Callejon Medical Site - Alba ValdezThe medical site in Jarabacoa provides health care to the poor through a clinic where Alba teaches, vaccinates, gives examinations and medications. She also leads medical outreaches in rural communities where health care is less accessible and affordable. Physical Therapy - Sissy EntrekinThe physical therapy site partners with Centro Especial Genesis. Sissy works with the children at the school to overcome various disabilities. She also includes the families into the therapy process, further helping the children to improve their specific condition. Social Work - Ligia GuzmanThe social work site in El Callejon builds unity among abused women and teenage girls through home visits, Bible study, literacy classes, and craft projects. Ligia teaches biblical principles concerning self-confidence, responsibility, sexual purity, wise decision-making, and character development. Special Education - Mercedes AbreuCentro Especial Genesis is a school for handicapped students with Downs Syndrome, Infantile Cerebral Palsy, Attention Deficit Disorder, Autism, and Learning Disabilities. Mercedes diagnoses, treats, and educates these students to prepare them to function independently in society. Blog - Centro Genesis Sports - Luis MercadoLuis works with youth baseball players at the community ball field. He coaches and mentors them. The sports site also includes working with handicapped children at a special education school. Luis spends time at the school using simple sports as a method of physical therapy and muscle coordination development.
